James McAvoy's Directorial Debut and Glasgow Filming

James McAvoy, the celebrated Scottish actor, is back in his hometown of Glasgow, but this time he's stepping behind the camera for his directorial debut, California Schemin'. The film tells the incredible true story of Silibil N' Brains, two Scottish rappers who, by adopting American personas, managed to dupe the music industry into believing they were established Californian artists.
Filming has been underway across various iconic Glasgow locations, including the Barrowland Ballroom, where McAvoy hosted a free, early-2000s-themed gig to authentically capture the era's vibe.
The production has also been spotted in areas like Maryhill, Park Circus, and The Barras Market, bringing a touch of Hollywood to the city's streets.
Before his rise to international fame with roles in X-Men and Atonement, McAvoy honed his craft at Glasgow's own Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS). Recognising the importance of accessible arts education, he established the James McAvoy Drama Scholarship at RCS. This scholarship aims to support aspiring actors from low-income backgrounds, ensuring that financial barriers don't hinder emerging talent.
McAvoy's return to Glasgow for California Schemin' not only highlights his dedication to storytelling but also underscores his commitment to nurturing the next generation of Scottish performers.
