Today's Challenge: A Cold Read Workout
📖 Step 1: Pick a Script
Find a new passage, monologue, or scene—something you haven’t read before. It could be a random page from a play, a film script, or even a passage from a book with strong dialogue.
⏳ Step 2: Give Yourself a Time Limit
You can skim-read the material before performing, but set a timer for a short prep period—just like in a real audition. This forces you to rely on instinct rather than over-rehearsing.
🎭 Step 3: Read It Aloud, Playing with Delivery
As you read:
✔️ Experiment with inflections, volume, and pacing
✔️ Adapt to the material in real time—are you discovering shifts in tone or emotion?
✔️ Stay present—don’t worry about making it perfect, just commit fully
🎥 Step 4: Record Your Read (One Take Only!)
If you want to push yourself further, record the read on camera. But remember: keep it natural and stay in the moment. No stopping, no do-overs—adjust as you go, just like in a casting room.
👀 Step 5: Watch It Back & Take Notes
Later, review your recording and pick up on areas to refine:
✔️ Were you rushing through sentences?
✔️ Did your breathing support your voice?
✔️ Were there moments where you could have added more variation?
Why This Works
✅ Builds confidence for auditions – The more you practice cold reads, the less intimidating they’ll be when they really count.
✅ Strengthens vocal awareness – Helps you maintain breath control, articulation, and energy under pressure.
✅ Boosts adaptability – Learning to make strong, instinctive choices quickly is an invaluable skill in the audition room.
Cold reading is like a muscle—if you don’t use it, it weakens. But with regular practice, you’ll step into any audition feeling prepared, adaptable, and ready to deliver.
